New College Out of Money: Teachers Unpaid, Not Teaching (12)

I wanted to go into a public agency and work with people who don't have funds to go to a private practitioner, and give them the respect and support that someone paying $200 per hour would elicit," says the 26-year-old, who was close to completing her master's in psychology when San Francisco's New College of California began to financially implode last fall.

School was supposed to start more than a month ago. Teachers haven't been paid for nearly four months. Classes are now postponed indefinitely, with the possibility that the college may soon cease to exist.

New College, a self-styled progressive school begun in 1971, is deep in a bizarre meltdown that is creating a wake of human suffering. Students dependent upon financial aid are seeing their aspirations dashed. Teachers are leading classes and helping students, but without getting paid.

I hope the Big Aristotle does well in the desert, but I need to see him run the floor in transition over the next couple of months at the Suns normal breakneck pace before I declare him the Shaquille ONeal of old. Because right now ... hes just an old Shaquille ONeal. Will Nolan Ryans presence make a difference with the Rangers?

NEW DAWG: Yes. Fans see Tom Hicks and they think liar. Fans see Nolan Ryan and they think integrity.

BUCK: Most definitely, and I have the crystal ball to prove it. I believe in Annie Savoys Church of Baseball.....and I believe in osmosis. If Tom Hicks and Jon Daniels allow Nolie to do his thing, at his own pace, with complete autonomy, well see a difference in 1.) immediate perception and 2.) long-term results. But this is a Hall of Fame-sized mess even for a Hall of Fame guy to clean up.

The Facts Of Life

Overfund" it, making big payments up front so you start amassing earnings faster. Another way to do that is with a low-load policy one with low fees (less than 1% a year) and low commissions (10 to 20% of a year's premium). Reputable low-load insurers include TIAA-CREF (800-223-1200), Ameritas (800-745-6665) and USAA (800-531-8000).

For the vast majority of families, level-premium term life is the best option. With that as your foundation, annual-renewable term can be a good supplement if your family takes on any big short-term obligations. (Maybe you're amassing debt while earning a midcareer MBA.) The premiums on ART policies grow slightly as you age, but for periods of up to five years, they're usually cheaper than level premium.

Term life insurance is as cheap as it's been in two decades, thanks to increasing life expectancies and cutthroat competition.

Man Dies Following Assault At Monroe Motel

MONROE, Wash. -- A spokesman for the Monroe police department said a 46-year-old man was assaulted at a motel early Tuesday morning and later died at a hospital, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

According to family members the victim is 46-year-old Kenny Wolfe.

Tuesday evening police responded to the industrial area of Monroe arrested a man they said they believe is responsible for Wolfes death.

Police said the victim was the manager of the Brookside Motel in the 19900 block of state Route 2.

From what I heard it was somebody who had stayed here before and was into a lot of drugs, and had to be evicted, the victims brother-in-law Ed Slyter said.

Slyter said he thinks the person who killed his brother-in-law returned to the motel Tuesday morning to confront the victim.

Some Cases Of Autism May Be Traced To The Immune System Of Mothers ...

We're very interested in understanding the underlying causes of autism," said Cindy Lawler, scientific program director at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. "This finding, in combination with other new research findings coming from NIH-funded studies, demonstrates the complexity of this disorder and underscores the importance of understanding how the mother's immune system can influence early brain development."

The study, "Maternally Derived Antibodies Specific for Fetal Brain Proteins," is to be published in the March 2008 issue of Neurotoxicology. It was funded by the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the M.I.N.D. Institute.
